10 Date Night Ideas – on the cheap!

Date nights are fun, right? With all the working, cooking, housekeeping, and fixing things, it’s nice to just let it all go for a night. However, as we all know, it can get expensive. Even those of us without children have our expenses too. From car payments to utility bills and mortgages, we all have things we pay for. Why not still enjoy date night, but on a budget, or even better, FREE! There are lots of things you can do around town, or even in your own home that still count. I’m going to share some ideas for some low cost, even free things that will still feel like a nice night with your loved one.

FREE Date Ideas:

  1. Make a nice dinner… TOGETHER. Get both of you involved in preparing some delicious meal together, and you will be amazed at how it brings you together. Then sit by a nice candle lit table and enjoy with a glass of wine.
  2. Go for a walk. Getting outside together and enjoying the sun or breeze is a great way to enjoy each other. And it’s free! Even watching the stars together can be a wonderful way to spend an evening.
  3. Clear off that DVR! How many things are recorded on there that you just haven’t seemed to watch yet? Catch up on all your recordings, while snuggled up in your PJs. It’s like a Netflix marathon, minus the Netflix!
  4. Give each other a massage. Hey, you don’t have to be a licensed masseuse to do so, just do what you’re good at. Maybe it’s a foot rub, a back rub, etc. It’ll be a nice way to help each other unwind and relax.
  5. Soak in a hot bath together. Not all of us are fortunate to have a hot tub at home, (although it is on our list to upgrade in the near future). Break out that wine again, draw a hot bath, add some bubbles to it, and relax.

Inexpensive Date Night Ideas:

  1.  Rent a movie and lay out a blanket on the floor. Red Box is always a cheap option, or maybe you pay for premium cable. (We do not, we semi cut the cord, and are working on going all the way with it) Have a little movie night indoor picnic.
  2. Go out for ice cream. Save on dinner by cooking at home, then splurge a little on dessert. If you’re lucky, there’s a nice little local place around, or you can even hit up a Dairy Queen if that’s all you have around. Get a small cone, and you won’t spend too much!
  3. Hit up your local farmer’s market. It’ll be nice to have local fresh ingredients when you go to do the at home cooking date!
  4. Head to the local thrift store. You never know what kinds of goodies you can find there! Maybe something you’ve been wanting to add to the home decor. Maybe you will find a fantastic new outfit to wear next time you splurge on date night!
  5. Go out to support your local high school. Check out a football game, choir concert, band concert, or even play. Some of those are free I’m sure, but even if there is a charge, it’ll be a small one, plus you’ll be supporting your local community.

There are so many things you can do for free or not a lot of cash and still enjoy quality time with your significant other. It doesn’t always have to be expensive dinners and fancy things. It’s about being together and having quality time, right? What are some of your other date night ideas on the cheap? I’d love to hear some!

  1. We often have to look for cheap date ideas because to us, staying home and playing board games just isn’t an option. We have three little boys and it’s really not a break even when we’re home. But I like the local highschool idea, going to a hockey game or something on the cheap. Thanks for the ideas!

    • Hi, Sarah! I completely understand that about the life with 3 little ones. I’m glad you enjoyed some of the other tips, though! Thank you so much for stopping by! 🙂

    • Congratulations on the upcoming wedding! It’s always nice to still be able to find fun things to do, even while not spending a ton. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

    • Yes, I love it. No farmer’s market going for us now, but I can’t wait until the weather brings them back around. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

    • Glad you enjoyed! We are always trying to figure out things to do that we don’t have to spend a ton on, so that is where the idea for this list came from. I’m putting together another list soon. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  2. Thanks for the free date night ideas! We have 2 littles and are on a tight budget, so free and cheap are always good. I like the renting the movie and laying a blanket on the floor idea. That changes it up from just sitting on the couch and watching a movie!

    • I have no littles, but I can imagine the budgeting that comes along with that as well. Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  3. Lovely ideas! Cooking together, walks and massages are my favorite! You don’t really need to spend a fortune to have a nice date 🙂

  4. I love these ideas. We are lucky enough that our little guy goes to bed very early, so we could definitely ditch the sitter and save some money by doing some of these ideas. Sometimes it’s too easy to get caught up in the “let’s get out of here” conversation that we forget we could also reframe being at home. 🙂

    • Aww, that’s great. Definitely worth it to stay in and save money, AND still have a good time. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  5. I think we’ve done most of what’s on here. Does that mean we’re real cheap? HAHAHA! Too funny. We’re pretty low key and how can you say no to a Netflix marathon in your PJs with wine and chocolate? 🙂 We enjoy cooking together too. We also like taking our bikes and going on picnics in the summer.

  6. Lovely ideas, sometimes we get caught up in every day life and forget to date after marriage. We often go out to explore in the car and find new places to visit where we live.

  7. Thanks for these ideas! Whenever I went on a date in the past I know I was always struggling to come up with things to do. I really like that these are cheap too because I don’t believe in spending loads of money just to spend time with someone. I enjoy being outside and taking walks for my dates.

  8. I love these ideas because they promote actually being with your partner and talking rather than zoning out. My fiance and I make dinner together most week nights, but it’s always fun to open a bottle of wine and add a little romance in the middle of an otherwise boring work week. I also love your idea of cooking at home and then going out for dessert. Ice cream dates always make me feel younger than ever.

    • Yes! That is so true. How many times do you see couples out and about, both face down into their phones! Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂

    • We do the same! Although more often than not lately, we are binge watching some show on Netflix! LOL. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
